Father Louis Hennepin was a French Récollect priest and explorer who spent some time around the Bay of Quinte in 1676-1677. He labelled the region north of Lake Ontario as “small villages of the Iroquois” and the area to the south of the lake as “great villages of the Iroquois”. The French version of this map was published in 1697, the English version a few years later. Both were dedicated to King William III of Britain (Louis is anglicized to Lewis on the English map) which led to Hennepin falling out of favour in France.
