The original map, dated 1815, was drawn in ink on a piece of fabric almost two metres long. It depicts the Trent River from its mouth at the Bay of Quinte all the way to Rice Lake. Adam Myers’ mills and Fairfield and Robinson’s mills are marked just above the bay. Further upstream a number of portages, falls and cascades are noted. Rice Lake itself is described as bordered by “high barren sandy hills” on the south and “oak and pine sand plains, high and dry soil, extending the whole length of the Rice Lake on each side.”
