Settlement of Upper Canada was very sparse and confined to the St. Lawrence River Valley and the shoreline of Lake Ontario. The influence of the Loyalist refugee relocation is evident in Prince Edward County and the northern shoreline of the Bay of Quinte. Other settlements are seen along the Niagara frontier and the western end of Lake Ontario. Mohawk settlements are found at Tyendinaga and the Grand River Valley. Across Lake Ontario, settlement had spread inland from the American colonies to cover the Finger Lakes area of northern New York State. York, the capital of Upper Canada, was growing slowly, as was Kingston. Inset: Section of map by Major Baron de Rottenburg, 1850. Belleville to Rawdon (Stirling). de Rottenburg created detailed maps of eastern Ontario, on which he made notes such as “steep sandy hill” (Oak Hill) and “Ridge Road very good”.
