Fairs and Exhibitions. All of the eight fairs running in Hastings today have been in existence for more than 100 years.
Belleville: The first fair was held on October 1, 1821, when Belleville was still known as Meyers’ Creek. The agricultural society that organized the fair was known as the Hastings Committee of the Midland District Agricultural Society.
Coe Hill: The first fair was held in 1883 at Salem, which no longer exists. The current location on the east side of the village was bought in 1926 and it has been enlarged twice. The name Coe Hill Agricultural Society was adopted in 1965.
Madoc: The Madoc Agricultural Society was organized in 1905. Until 1921 it rented property on the old country road between Madoc and Marmora. In 1922, the fair was moved to the property named St. Charles farm on the road between Madoc and Hazzard’s Corners, about one mile from the village.
Marmora: This society was organized in 1890 and the fair has always been held in the village at the Marmora Fairgrounds on Victoria Street.
Mohawk Society: The fair is located in Tyendinaga Territory. It was organized in 1901 and was held at “The Plains” where an airport was operated during the two world wars. Today it is held at the Council House Grounds, a few miles west of Deseronto. The first name of the society was Bay of Quinte Mohawk Agricultural Association which was changed to the Mohawk Agricultural Society.
Shannonville: The Shannonville Agricultural Society, originally known as the Tyendinaga Township Society, began operating fairs in 1856 on the north bank of the Salmon River in Shannonville. Popularly known as The Shannonville World’s Fair, the event was moved to its present site at the Tyendinaga Township Recreation Complex at Melrose and McFarlane roads in the year 2000.
Stirling: The Stirling Agricultural Society was formed in 1858 and its fair has been known by different names – the County Fair, Rawdon Fair, Huntingdon Fair and Foxboro Fair.
Tweed: The North Hastings Society was organized in 1860 and the Hungerford Township Society was formed in 1880. They are known now as the Tweed-Hungerford Agricultural Society. This fair has been held on the same property since 1902. Some of the earlier fairs were held on the main street. The current property was acquired in 1900.
