Roads to rocky hills. The Hastings, Monck and Peterson roads through northern Hastings were only a part of a network of colonization roads built in Canada West in the 1850s. The government’s intention was to draw immigrants into the unsettled shield country to try their hand at farming. Many gave up in despair. Note that the roads are surveyed in straight lines, despite the rocky, hilly, swampy nature of the land.
