This excerpt from a map dated March 16, 1868, shows proposed routes of the Murray Canal. Opened in 1889, the canal cuts across the isthmus linking Prince Edward County with the rest of Ontario. The 12 kilometre-long canal created a safer and shorter route between the Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario at Wellers Bay.
